DescriptionReinforcing the Catalan/UK connection that comes from label bosses Mirus and now Paul Loraine, UK based Retrac returns to Indigo Raw for their 14th release. Much has changed since his last outing on the label. His own production style has reached a focused maturity, which is evident in the pair originals he provides for IR14. Around them, the burgeoning Barcelona imprint has built a varied package that sends strong signals of intent.
A Side Lie Detector gets things rolling from the off, assertive drums contrast the lush chords that characterise the release. Retrac takes familiar house elements and makes them his own, finding the perfect balance of toughness and sensitivity on this rushing house track.
The label heads combine as Hit and Miss for a sun kissed remix of Lie Detector. The track glides on a wide bed of unhurried funk, reclining the chord stabs for blissed out effect. Mixing East Coast US house with a healthy Balearic slice and a hint of Krautrock this is perfect summer vibes.
Retracs Shades takes things a little darker, swirling vocals build as the melody ascends. Working an analogue pulse then drenching it in sub bass, he gives the track a raw, aquatic feel.
Taking on Shades, Londons Ethyl gets things bouncing with tough drums and insistent pads. Working in spacey congas for hypnotic effect, he lets the melody skim gritty bass lines for a churning, rolling rework.
Jarno drops down the energy and adds a trippy edge to round off the Indigo Raw 14. Continuing the hypnotism, his spacey remix has a bed of meandering chords and choppy woodblocks that provide the setting for twisted drops of acid to dart around.
