DescriptionSamu.l drops the People Are Sleeping EP via Alex Arnouts Dogmatik Digital imprint this June, comprising four original cuts from the British producer. Samu.ls career has taken big steps in the right direction over the past few years, racking up singles for the likes of Surface, One Records, Tenampa and Baalsaal to name a few. Here Samu.l follows in the footsteps of Maya Jane Coles and Dusky, joining the Dogmatik roster, a striking indication of the quality embodied in his work.
The single opens with Have It Like That, a mood-driven dark house workout, embracing a sparse, stripped aesthetic. Samu.l rides out the drum-led groove alongside brooding organ lines, processed vocal chops and bubbling atmospherics to create an evolving peak-time slow bloomer. In The Clouds follows, taking on a similar focus with loose, swinging percussion, soft vocal murmurs and gritty bass tones. Things blossom and retract in this state throughout the records near six-minute duration with subtle filter sweeps and hidden nuances in the groove keeping things enticing. On the B-Side the English producer takes a more reserved route with the production, opting for direct drums and a penetrative, bulbous sub-bass hook as the driving force. Tension building strings and expansive reverb bursts then fuel the vibe and atmosphere of the record brilliantly as they softly meander around the sturdy foundations of the track. Title track People Are Sleeping closes things here, Samu.l implants an organic edge on the percussion, while lingering melodies intricately ease in and out of the groove and dark, glitchy noise sweeps add a further character.
