Hydras at the Helm

  • Artists Kleidosty
  • Release Date 2013-07-03
  • Labels Looq Records
  • Catalog LQ1142
  • Description Looq Records presents the next installment of electronic works from US-born musician and artist Kleidosty. On Hydras At The Helm, Kleidosty retains the ambient aspect of his earlier releases, "Kleidosty EP" and "Edifice of Artifice", but now expands the sound palate to add synths and beats. The new sonic territory brings with it some 80's influences, a bit tongue-in-cheek at times (Hydras At The Helm) and sometimes heartfelt (For a Fraction of Bread). All of the tracks started as purely ambient recordings, and some of them deliberately stayed there to remain close to the artist's primary influence. Kleidosty's method is thorough, working and reworking tracks, sometimes creating several versions, until the disparate elements have coalesced into something engaging and thoughtful. The ends of many of the songs feature ambient segues as a means of retelling the song and creating flow into the subsequent song. As with previous work, the overall effect is stunning and significant, along the lines of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Fennesz, and Belong. Jason Kleidosty was born in 1969 in Los Angeles and now lives in the Bay Area. He is a graduate of the MFA program at California College of Art in San Francisco, CA. A short list of his musical influences includes Boards of Canada; Stars of the Lid; Lone; Oval; Freescha; Bibio; Brian Eno; Nobukazu Takemura and various 20th Century composers. He has been making ambient music since the age of 17, before he was exposed to others making similar music. He has made the music for Anthony Discenza's video projection, Suspension, which has screened at the 2000 Whitney Biennial and various other venues. His previous releases on Looq Records include the "Kleidosty EP" and the full length album, "Edifice of Artifice".
