DescriptionWith this next release, we introduce UK contemporary classical composer Tom Hodge to the FIELDS family, in this two-part collaborative EP with Max Cooper of starkly beautiful new combinations of the acoustic and the mechanical.
With the exception of the strings that underpin Quantet, each of these collaborations began with Tom's raw solo piano. Recorded to retain the acoustics of pedals working and fingers on keys, the parts were then transformed as Max added layers of glitch, abrasion, tightly looped samples and his own cinematic style of electronica post-production. Shipping the unfinished pieces back and forth between their studios, the collaborators then polished each into their final dramatic hybrid shapes.
This first part of the EP also features one of our favourite UK electronica acts, Petrels, remixing Fragments of Self. He brings new synths, strings and a rhythm created with a chopped-up kick, expanding Fragments' original duet form to slowly build a loosely improvised orchestra of sound.
More to come. Look out for part two of the Fragmented Self EP in a few weeks, along with Max's announcement of his Fragmented Self tour!
