Since the launch of his label Amam at the beginning of this year, Alessio Mereu has provided a streak of quality house releases, always directly involved with the music, either solo or teaming up with friends like, Matteo Spedicati, Signor Andreoni and Coyu. With Amam's fifth release, he unveils the new project name DUM in collaboration with Andrea Ferlin.
Fellow Italian producer Ferlin made his debut with Freak n' Chic, and after a few more EPs first teamed up with Mereu for last year's Deep Thoughts EP on Contexterrior. Now their fusion of sound and technique is unified under the DUM moniker for their immaculately produced, yet soul-filled house grooves. DUM part 1 is their first release under this name and a taste of what's to come with their forthcoming full-length album. "Tread On" kicks things off with a confident swagger, with buoyant bass and a chorus of handclaps. The gradual introduction and interplay of bongos and congas creates a swell of energy, just in time for the subtle horn accents to appear. During the breakdown, a strange spoken word sample explains his creative process of music making, and then the oomph gushes back in. With "Rituals", their sound enters darker and moodier terrains. While the rhythm remains brisk, the resonating chimes seem to suspend the track in time. Soon, the melody enters with a certain mystique, like a detective searching for the perfect beat, propelling things forward once again. While they may call themselves DUM, Mereu and Ferlin are certainly no idiots when it comes to creating crafty beats!
