Adventures In 4X4 EP

  • Artists Alex Coulton
  • Release Date 2013-02-18
  • Labels Hypercolour
  • Catalog HYPELTDDIG09
  • Description Hailing from Manchester but more sonically related to the melange of house, techno and bass emanating from Bristol in recent years, Alex Coulton is next up on HypeLTD. Signed to imprints like Idle Hands and Horizontal Ground, the man might only just be at the end of his teens, but the music he makes is way beyond that as evidenced by the expansive four track EP he serves up here. Dance, Max opens up the vinyl-only release with big, globular melodic stabs that form the centrepiece of the track. A frazzled synth breakdown at the mid point resets before the tune takes off again, and infectiously so. The stabs return accompanied by warm sub-bass on the drop, relatively stripped back but with heavy momentum. It's a subtle banger, catchy without being caustic. A2 'Submerged' is just that, sunken down into a bed of echoing and liquid dub techno chords. Sharp edged percussion cuts through the vastness to anchor you to a rhythm, and its then a case of basking in the glow of the wide-open synths that ring out in all directions. 'Function' on the flip is much more militant tune with a seductively rough swing, delightfully to the point. Scattered claps, distant wrought iron synth sounds and guttural kicks all coalesce into something that's purposefully raw, direct and jackin'. Fade Realization closes on a slowed and slurred tempo, the drums are in no way regimented, scuffing then skipping as laser like synths spray across the whole face of the tune. It's a deep and direct dub techno bass hybrid with rhythmic potency. Overall, a diverse EP that showcases Coulton's ability to deliver different flavours of high quality house music primed to move dancefloors
